Coral Gables, FL. (December 19, 2017) - The University of Miami School of Communication will offer a new course focusing on the experiences of recent Cuban immigrants for the spring semester. The course titled “Faces of a New Cuban Generation” will mirror a modern-day newsroom and give students the opportunity to work with media outlets such as Telemundo 51 and 14ymedio, a binational media startup.
The course will be taught by University of Miami associate professor Sallie Hughes
and CFO of 14ymedio Alejandro Gonzalez. The main objectives for this course include developing skills in news reporting, interviewing and community engagement. Not only will students create content for media in South Florida, but they will also plan a series of gatherings to engage Cuban immigrants who have arrived in the last 5 to 10 years.
Alejandro Gonzalez emphasized that UM is a perfect place to offer this course since college students give unique insight and hopes that the course will offer an extraordinary experience.
“College students bring a new perspective,” said Gonzalez. “ The end you will see a truly interactive project.”
Requirements for this course suggest junior, senior, or graduate status. However, underclassmen are encouraged to enroll. For more information, email Alejandro Gonzalez.
