Shelter Brief

Sixteen homeless dogs will be placed up for adoption at a Doral animal center after Hurricane Irma flooding caused Key West pet shelters to close.

The Humane Society of the United States reached out to the Miami-Dade Animal Services Pet Adoption and Protection Center Monday. The center agreed to take at least 16 dogs on Tuesday.

The dogs in the Key West shelters were either up for adoption or nearly up for adoption, Sharon Gregory, the center’s director, said. They will remain permanently in South Florida and be put up for adoption.

“We are happy that we have on our adoption floor,” Gregory said. “These aren’t dogs that will have someone looking for them.”
